Districts in Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Maharashtra are rapidly emerging as new cybercrime hotspots, prompting the Centre to direct states to act swiftly by intensifying crackdowns, expediting investigations, and clearing backlogs to prevent the situation from escalating further.
According to sources, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a high-level meeting last month, with senior officials from hotspot districts and ranges, along with other top officers, to address the growing cybercrime threat. The meeting included Directors General of Police (DGPs), commissioners from all states and Union Territories (UTs), their nominated state cybercrime heads, and officers from regions identified as cybercrime hotspots.
Sources revealed that while Jharkhand had long been a cybercrime hub, new hotspots have now emerged in Bharatpur Range (Rajasthan), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Kolkata (West Bengal), and Dumka (Jharkhand).
Sources said district SSPs who also attended the meeting were told to mitigate cybercrime. “The government has asked states to take technical help from the Centre to swiftly solve cybercrimes. Since there are new hotspots which have triggered concerns among cyber-security agencies, soon a meeting will be held to prioritise probe," a senior official said.
To strengthen coordination and enforcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established seven Joint Cyber Coordination Teams (JCCTs) under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). These teams cover regions, including Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, and Guwahati—areas identified with high cybercrime activity and complex, multi-jurisdictional challenges.
The MHA noted that seven workshops for JCCTs have been conducted in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow, Ranchi, and Chandigarh to enhance coordination among law-enforcement agencies across states and UTs.
