'RCB Organised Victory Celebration, We Did Not Request': G Parameshwara On Bengaluru Stampede

Bengaluru Stampede: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara clarified that the RCB organised the Bengaluru victory celebration independently, and the state only facilitated it.

Bengaluru Stampede: Karnataka Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday said the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are the ones who organised the victory celebration in the city, and that the state government did not request the same.

Parameshwara also said the RCB brought the team of players to Bengaluru for celebrations, and that was when the government felt this should be facilitated.

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the stampede incident. Let the report be out so that action can be taken if any lapses are found and whoever is responsible for the same," the state Home Minister said.

“We did not request the RCB or the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), they organised it (the victory celebration)," he said.

“They are the ones who brought the team to Bengaluru. The government also felt it should facilitate this, as it was the Bengaluru team. We, as the government, only participated in this event, and I feel very sorry that this incident happened," Parameshwara said.

“I was very sad looking at the dead bodies, most of them were youngsters," he said, adding, “Nobody would have thought, we would take strict action and find where the lapses happened."

As many as 11 people died, while more than 30 others were injured in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday.

News agency PTI quoted police sources and said there was confusion over the victory parade, free passes, overcrowding and limited seats at the stadium, which are believed to be some of the reasons that led to the stampede.

The initial chaos that later turned into a stampede began as several cricket enthusiasts who did not have entry tickets to the stadium tried to swarm into the premises along with those who had valid tickets, sources in the police said.

During the chaos, some people fell on the ground, some got injured while trying to scale huge gates to gain entry into the stadium.
