Former Arsenal and Real Sociedad forward Carlos Vela called it quits from football, retiring from the sport after a 19-year career on Tuesday.

Vela came through Arsenal’s youth system but faced work permit issues, leading to loans at several Spanish clubs such as Salamanca, Osasuna, and Real Sociedad.

He made 29 Premier League appearances for Arsenal before spending seven years at LaLiga club Real Sociedad.

At Real Sociedad, Vela’s flair, creativity, and goal-scoring ability shone, making him a fan favorite. Vela played comfortably as a forward, attacking midfielder, or winger and also earned 72 caps for Mexico, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice.

“Throughout my career, I have experienced some very special moments, but the time has come to officially retire from professional football," he wrote on Instagram. “It has been an honor and a privilege to share my career with all of you."

During the 2019 MLS season, Vela set a league record by scoring 34 goals and is the all-time leader in goals, assists, and appearances for the club.

In 2018, Vela made a significant move to Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in Major League Soccer (MLS). He quickly became the face of the franchise and one of the league’s most dominant players, leading his team to win the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup.

In 2019, he had a record-breaking season, scoring 34 goals in the regular season and earning the MLS MVP award. Under his leadership, LAFC became a formidable team in the league.

“He has been the heartbeat, the captain, and the face of LAFC," club co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a statement.

Vela’s international career with Mexico was marked by brilliance and controversy. He played in two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2018) and was known for his technical ability and vision. However, he occasionally had a complicated relationship with the national team, stepping away from international duties due to personal reasons and differences with management.
