Rehab centre owner held for ‘assault’ on female patients

Guwahati: Officers from Dispur police station arrested the owner of a city-based rehabilitation centre on Saturday following allegations of physical assault made by several female patients.

The arrest was made after multiple complaints emerged regarding mistreatment and abusive behaviour within the facility.The accused, identified as Bornali Baishya, owns ‘Shrishti Wellness Home’ located in the city’s Hengrabari area. According to police, Baishya was detained for questioning on Friday after the Assam Rehab Association filed a formal complaint against her.“An inquiry was initiated after some female patients at the rehabilitation centre came forward with disturbing accounts of harassment and torture by her, following which we arrested her,” said Dispur police station OC Bhaskar Malla Patowary.The officer added that these alleged incidents occurred over the past few months, raising serious concerns about patient safety. “The wellness centre has been operating for four to five years, and currently there were about 40 female patients and 15 male patients,” the OC stated.Police have also filed charges against her husband and other staff members in connection with the incident. “We have begun a thorough investigation into this matter to ascertain whether more people were involved,” he added.
