Relief for Kadamakudy residents as child-friendly boat service resumes

Children board SWTD’s child-friendly boat in Kadamakudy on Monday

Kochi: In a major relief to students and residents of Kadamakudy island panchayat, state water transport department (SWTD) has decided to resume regular boat services after the withdrawal of a child-friendly boat triggered widespread travel difficulties in the region. The issue arose after SWTD boat no. S49, which was operating under child-friendly boat project, was withdrawn from service on June 9 and shifted to Panavally station in Alappuzha district. The boat had been a vital mode of transport for residents and students travelling between Chittoor, Kadamakudy and Eloor.According to Kadamakudy grama panchayat president M S Antony, the service was discontinued without any prior notice to the panchayat, causing significant inconvenience to daily commuters.

He said locals were initially informed that the boat had been taken for maintenance, but later learned that it had been transferred to Alappuzha.“Suspension of the service without an alternative arrangement created severe travel difficulties for island residents and affected students travelling to schools,” Antony said.Students attending institutions such as Govt VHSS, HSS of Jesus, Kothad, St Francis School, Thevara, and several other schools in nearby areas had been relying on the service for their daily commute.

Following complaints from locas, a delegation led by Antony, along with development standing committee chairman Ashok Kumar and ward members met SWTD senior superintendent T M Seema and demanded immediate restoration of the service. Vypeen MLA Tony Chammany also intervened in the matter and urged authorities to resolve the issue.SWTD subsequently arranged rescue boat services on June 11, 12 and 13 to assist commuters.

The department has now decided to deploy boat no. S35 for regular operations in Kadamakudy from June 15.Antony said the department has also assured that a permanent replacement boat will be made available within one-and-a-half months. A new child-friendly boat is currently under construction and will be deployed once completed, ensuring uninterrupted services for students and locals in the future.
