ECI orders re-elections at 15 booths in Magrahat Paschim AC and Diamond Harbour AC in South 24 Parganas, after complaints of EVM vote tampering

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday ordered re-elections at 15 polling stations in two assembly constituencies — Magrahat Paschim AC and Diamond Harbour AC — in West Bengal over complaints of vote tampering.

Fresh elections will be held at 11 polling stations in 142–Magrahat Paschim AC and four polling stations in 143–Diamond Harbour AC in the South 24 Parganas district, said the ECI in a release.

Re-elections have been ordered in 15 booths across two constituencies — 11 in 142-Magrahat West and four in 143-Diamond Harbour.

List of booths under 142-Magrahat West Assembly constituency:

46 – Yarpur F.P. School, Room No. 2

126 – Najra F.P. School, Room No. 1

127 – Najra F.P. School, Room No. 2

128 – Deula F.P. School, Room No. 1

142 – Ghola Nayapara Girls High Madrasa, Room No. 2

214 – Ektaara Malaya F.P. School, Room No. 1

215 – Ektaara Malaya F.P. School, Room No. 2

216 – Ektaara Malaya Dhoda F.P. School, Room No. 1

230 – Bahirpur Kurkuria F.P. School, Room No. 1

231 – Bahirpur Kurkuria F.P. School, Room No. 2

232 – Bahirpur Kurkuria F.P. School, Room No. 3

The ECI said preparations are underway to ensure the smooth conduct of polling across the two seats.

Why Repolling Was Necessitated

On April 29 — when the second phase of elections was held in West Bengal — the poll body received complaints, alleging vote tampering in these booths.

As per the allegations, buttons on electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Falta, Magrahat, Diamond Harbour and Budge Budge constituencies were marked with black tape, adhesive substances, ink, and even perfume.

Later, sources said 23 cases of the alleged vote tampering had been prima facie confirmed, with 20 from Falta.
