The Thirunanriyur–Alaveli Road, a 2.5 km road, which serves as a key link connecting several panchayat villages in the Sembanarkoil Town Panchayat of the Sirkazhi Assembly Constituency, has fallen into disrepair, with residents and commuters demanding government intervention.
Social activist A. Apparsundaram urged immediate restoration of the road, which had been riddled with potholes and trenches for over a year. The stretch connects villages such as Thirunanriyur, Alaveli, and Semangalam — primarily agrarian communities — and has become nearly impassable even for two-wheelers.
“The road is a crucial passage for farmers, agricultural labourers, women, students, and the general public. Its current state severely disrupts daily mobility and agricultural operations,” said Mr. Apparsundaram.
He pointed out that the road leads to the famed Lakshmi Pureeswarar Temple in Thirunanriyur. Devotees from different places visit the shrine regularly.
R. Sathya, a resident from Thirunanriyur, said the road was last laid several years ago, but heavy usage by farm vehicles, lorries, tractors, and heavy vehicles transplanting machinery had led to extensive damage and deep potholes.
An official from Sembanarkoil Town Panchayat said they would look into the issue.
