Residents of North Chennai welcomed the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council’s decision to permanently close the 10-tonne incinerator plant in Manali.
The plant was set up in 2019 through corporate social responsibility scheme for roughly ₹70 lakhs to collect and processes domestic, commercial, hospital, and other mixed wastes from Manali Zone (II).
The resolution, approved at the Council meeting held at Ripon Buildings on Friday, was put forth after a fact-finding report by NGOs and experts claimed that the incinerator had been operating without renewing the annual Consent to Operate (CTO) certificate from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
Several local complaints and objections were raised, and the matter was escalated to the National Green Tribunal.
