While officials of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) have repeatedly stated that the reconstruction of Varthur Main Road (State Highway–35) would be expedited, residents have claimed that there was no progress.
They have once again written to the Urban Development Department through the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), seeking immediate intervention.
The residents of Varthur, Gunjur, Balagere, and adjoining areas said that the road, an important State highway in East Bengaluru, has become unsafe and nearly unmotorable. Large potholes, uneven surfaces, and frequent flooding during rains have made daily travel dangerous for thousands of commuters, including schoolchildren and senior citizens.
Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians face danger, while ambulances and school buses often get stuck in traffic caused by the battered road, the citizens said.
Though the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has been assigned the task of reconstructing and expanding the highway under the GBA’s supervision, the residents alleged that no substantial work has taken place and that the condition of the roads continues to worsen despite repeated assurances.
The letter said that the lack of coordination between KRDCL and GBA has left citizens suffering.
The residents also urged the government to expedite the sanctioned reconstruction using scientific design, durable materials, and proper sub-grade compaction. The letter also called for the inclusion of storm-water drains, pedestrian footpaths, lane markings, street lighting, and roadside greenery to develop a sustainable ‘Green Corridor’.
