Chaos erupted at Buxar Sadar Hospital as the OPD services ground to a halt following the unfortunate death of a 27-year-old woman during her treatment. Her family has launched a vigorous protest, accusing the medical staff of negligence, and they blocked a prominent road for several hours in a desperate call for accountability.
Buxar: Outpatient department (OPD) services remained paralysed at Buxar sadar hospital on Wednesday following the death of a 27-year-old woman during treatment on Tuesday night, triggering angry protests by her family.
They alleged medical negligence on the part of the doctors and blocked the Buxar–Chausa main road for several hours.According to police, Hevanti Devi, wife of Rajesh Kumar Singh and a resident of Tiyara village under Rajpur police station, was admitted to the Sadar hospital around 11pm on Tuesday in critical condition with severe diarrhoea. Emergency duty doctor Saraswati Chandra Mishra conducted a preliminary examination and prescribed medicines, after which two injections were administered by hospital staff. The victim’s husband, Rajesh Singh, alleged that his wife’s condition deteriorated after the injections. He further claimed that the doctor did not re-examine her properly and instead advised the family to shift her to another hospital. The bereaved husband, who has three children, blamed the doctors for her death, claiming that she could have been saved with timely and proper treatment.Angered by the incident, family members and locals blocked the Buxar–Chausa main road in front of the hospital.
They placed stretchers, shop benches and other items on the road and staged a sit-in protest, demanding strict action against the doctors. They refused to clear the road until assurances by senior officials were given. The blockade caused a five-kilometre-long traffic jam, severely inconveniencing commuters and patients.
Traffic on the road remained completely halted at the time of filing this report.Meanwhile, the doctor concerned reportedly left the hospital over security fears to avoid confrontation with the protesters.
On receiving information, a team from the Town police station reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitated family members.Town police station SHO Manoj Kumar said, “The police requested the family to allow the body to be sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. Action will be taken as per the law.”Several attempts were made to contact Buxar civil surgeon, Dr Shiv Kumar Prasad, over the prevailing situation at the hospital, but he did not respond to calls.
