Fiorentina's Nicolò Zaniolo may face a significant ban after Roma accused him of assaulting two youth team players.

Fiorentina winger Nicolò Zaniolo may face a significant ban after Roma accused him of assaulting two youth team players.

The incident allegedly occurred following Fiorentina’s victory over Roma in the Primavera youth league title playoff semifinal on Monday.

Zaniolo denied any misconduct after Roma released a statement addressing the “regrettable incident." However, the Italian soccer federation reportedly launched an investigation on Tuesday.

“Initial reports suggest the player entered the Primavera team’s dressing room after the match and exhibited provocative behavior towards some of the Giallorossi youth players," Roma stated. “During the confrontation, two players from the Primavera squad were allegedly physically struck."

Zaniolo is currently on loan at Fiorentina from Galatasaray. He joined the Turkish team from Roma after spending five years at the capital club, where he was named Serie A Young Player of the Year in 2019.

The 25-year-old Zaniolo was present in the stands at Viola Park to watch the match on Monday. Following Roma’s accusations, Fiorentina released Zaniolo’s statement.

“After the match, I went to the locker room to congratulate the Fiorentina boys and then went to the Roma locker room to commend them on their season as well," Zaniolo explained. “However, they began insulting me, so to prevent the situation from escalating, I decided to leave."

Zaniolo was once considered one of Italy’s most promising prospects, making his international debut as a teenager in 2019.

Unfortunately, injuries have hindered his career. He has not played for Italy since missing last year’s European Championship due to a metatarsal fracture sustained while on loan at Aston Villa during the second-to-last match of the season.

Both clubs finished next to each other, with Roma taking the fifth spot with 69 points while Fiorentina took 65 points taking them to sixth in the position with the former securing Europa League football while the latter will take part in the Conference League.

Zaniolo’s loan-spell with Fiorentina ended on a disappointing note with the Italian star being unable to score a single goal in his nine appearances for the club and is set to once again go back to his parent club as well now.
