Chaos unfolded around The Players Championship on Saturday morning after a fatal shooting near the venue forced officials to delay spectator entry. The incident happened close to TPC Sawgrass, where thousands of fans were expected to watch the third round of one of golf’s biggest events.

Authorities from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, less than a mile from the course. Two people were killed in the incident at a Walgreens parking lot nearby.Because of the situation and the overnight police search for the suspect, fans were temporarily blocked from entering the tournament grounds on Saturday morning. Officials worked through the night with the PGA Tour to make sure the event could continue safely.

Even though gates opened later than planned, tournament play itself still began on time, allowing the competition to continue while authorities secured the area.
