Hyderabad witnessed a unique awareness event on Sunday, as over 200 people took part in the ‘Race Against Resistance – AMR Awareness 4K Challenge’, aimed at highlighting the dangers of antibiotic misuse and overuse.
The run, organised by the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with the Superheroes Against Superbugs initiative, combined fitness with education through a format where participants solved puzzles related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The event served as a prelude to the upcoming World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), observed globally from November 18 to 24 to promote responsible use of antibiotics.
Speaking at the event, Prashant Garg, executive chairperson of LVPEI, warned against the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, describing it a serious threat to the community. He urged people not to purchase medicines over the counter or take antibiotics without the doctor’s prescription. “Always complete the full course prescribed by your doctor; stopping midway only fuels resistance,” Dr. Garg said.
