S.N. Hegde, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore (UoM), passed away in Mysuru on December 17. He was 83.

Mr. Hegde, who was a professor of zoology, served as the Vice-Chancellor for two terms, from 1997 to 2003.

He passed away at a private hospital in Mysuru. His last rites will be held after the arrival of his daughter from abroad, according to sources.

Meanwhile, H.A. Venkatesh, former chairperson of Mysuru Paints and Varnishes, has condoled the demise.

In a statement, he said he had the privilege of serving as a member of UoM’s Senate and Syndicate during Prof. Hegde’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor. “He always expressed well-informed opinions on matters concerning the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000, and was an effective speaker on public platforms,” Mr. Venkatesh said.

He added that Prof. Hegde had worked as a professor and researcher at Mangalore University.
