BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan on Thursday raised concerns in Parliament over inconsistent pricing and portion sizes of food items served across eateries in India.

Speaking during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, the Gorakhpur MP requested the central government to introduce a law to regulate the prices of food and beverages sold in hotels, restaurants, and roadside dhabas.

Kishan pointed out the significant variations in both the size and cost of the same item at different locations. “In one place, the samosa is small; in another, it is large. Prices also differ widely," he said in the House. He cited examples, saying, “A samosa at a roadside eatery has a different price than one in a hotel—and even the size differs. Likewise, dal tadka is available for Rs 100 in one place, Rs 120 in another, and even up to Rs 1,000 in some hotels."

He added that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought reforms in several sectors, there is still no regulatory system in place to fix or standardise food pricing across the country’s food outlets.

‘Mention Quantity & Oil Used On Menus’

Ravi Kishan also highlighted the lack of transparency in restaurant menus. He expressed concern that most menus list only the price of a dish, without indicating the portion size. He argued that this creates confusion among customers and leads to food wastage. He urged that menus should clearly mention both the quantity of each dish and the type of oil or ghee used in preparation. “Customers have the right to know what they are eating and how much they are paying for it," he said.

Who Regulates Food Standards in India?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the apex body responsible for ensuring food quality and safety in the country. Established in August 2011 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, FSSAI operates under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This law consolidates various food-related regulations into a single framework. FSSAI sets standards for the production, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food across India, and it is mandatory for all food businesses to obtain an FSSAI licence or registration.
