Even as the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway has offered respite to motorists, three incidents of stones being hurled at vehicles along the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar stretch have raised security concerns.
A motorist uploaded a video of a stone being thrown at his vehicle on June 15. The footage also shows a similar attack on two other heavy vehicles and the windshield being damaged. The video went viral on Monday.
Rupali Darekar, superintendent of police (highway traffic), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, told TOI the incidents were not related to robbery or theft. “They are local youths. We are intensifying the search for them. It takes around half-an-hour to reach the site after taking a U turn. By then, the youths flee. Those found indulging in such acts will face severe action."
Meanwhile, police have announced increased surveillance amid commuters’ concern, the TOI report said. Currently, four highway traffic police vehicles patrol the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar section — one police inspector, two sub-inspectors and 10 constables.
