Star Indian men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty on Wednesday put on a brave show to beat the World No. 5 pair of Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang in a three-game thriller to start their BWF World Tour Finals campaign on a high in Hangzhou.

With the Chinese duo leading their head-to-head record at 7-3, Satwik-Chirag were assumed to be the underdogs in the encounter and having lost the first game 12-21, the Indians looked on the back foot.

Satwik-Chirag led for most of the second game, but Liang and Wang made a late surge to level the scores and eventually bag match point. But the Indian duo kept their nerve and bagged the second game 22-20 to push the thrilling encounter into a decider.

In the third game, Satwik-Chirag held an 11-9 lead at the interval but post the break, they looked more dominant than the rest of the match, as they bagged 10 of the next 15 points to register an emphatic win.

Satwik-Chirag will take on the Indonesian duo of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri on Thursday in the second group game. The latter pair hold a 1-0 lead over the Indians, having beaten them at the Australian Open quarterfinal last month.
