The in-form Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty booked their place in a second straight men’s doubles final with a commanding victory over Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the China Masters Super 750 on Saturday.
Indians Dominate Former World Champions
Fresh off a World Championships bronze in Paris and a runner-up finish at the Hong Kong Open, the Asian Games gold medallists put in a near-flawless display to outclass their long-time nemesis in straight games, winning 21-17, 21-14 in just 41 minutes.
Chia and Soh, former world champions and two-time Olympic medallists, had historically dominated the rivalry with an 11-4 head-to-head advantage. However, Satwik and Chirag had recently turned the tide, beating them en route to their World Championships podium finish earlier this year.
On Saturday, the Indians combined relentless attacking play with resolute defence, while Chirag consistently controlled the front court. Their pressure forced Aaron Chia into repeated errors, particularly in crucial moments.
The opening game was fiercely contested. The Malaysians surged ahead 10-7 after a run of four points, but a string of errors — including a costly service fault from Aaron — allowed Satwik and Chirag to claw back. Though Chia and Soh held a narrow 11-10 lead at the interval, momentum soon swung.
At 14-13, another mistake from Aaron gave the initiative to the Indians. Satwik unleashed a barrage of smashes while Chirag forced errors at the net, stretching the lead to 18-14. A sharp return handed them four game points, and they sealed the opener on their second chance.
Ruthless Finish in the Second Game
The second game showcased the Indians’ dominance. Satwik’s booming smashes and Chirag’s sharp front-court interceptions saw them storm to an 8-2 lead. Although the Malaysians briefly fought back to close the gap to 6-8, Satwik-Chirag entered the interval comfortably ahead at 11-6.
Aaron and Soh tried to rally, narrowing it to 9-11, but the Indians immediately responded with a six-point burst to make it 15-9. At 16-12, Satwik’s thunderous smash and a fortunate net cord put the Malaysians on the back foot. Chirag then sealed the match with a precise deep return followed by a decisive smash.
