SC Raps Actor Darshan Over VIP Jail Treatment, Says It Shows 'His Capacity To Defy System'

Karnataka had challenged the bail granted to Darshan and others in the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Thursday slammed Kannada actor Darshan and strongly condemned the conduct of jailed celebrities, raising concerns about VIP treatment in prisons and the misuse of influence.

The top court rejected Darshan’s bail plea in the Renukaswamy murder case, citing his celebrity status, past behaviour, and the potential threat to the fairness of the trial.

“Darshan enjoys celebrity status, a mass following, political clout, and financial power. His conduct inside the jail – including recorded instances of VIP treatment, violations of jail rules, and registered FIRs for misuse of facilities – reflects his capacity to defy the system even while in custody," the court said.

While turning down his plea for bail, the bench stated “granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder, sends wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system."

The court further observed that “influence, resources and social status cannot form a basis for granting bail where there is a genuine risk of prejudice to the investigation or trial."

In Darshan’s case, the court said, his popularity and connections raised serious concerns about potential obstruction.
