Members of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam Vocational Higher Secondary School at Adimaly, Idukki, have completed a novel initiative to extend support to cancer patients. Under the month-long initiative Coconut Shell Challenge, students collected coconut shells and brought them to the school, where they were procured by an Ernakulam-based company. “The challenge aimed at nurturing eco-friendly habits among students while encouraging them to participate in social service. During the period the students collected over 500 kg of coconut shells and earned ₹12,500,” said said NSS Programme Officer Ajai B.
“Travel expense to hospitals is a major burden for cancer patients. The entire amount will be used for travel and other expenses for cancer patients and those under palliative care,” he said.
In 2024, the NSS unit had provided Onam kits to patients under palliative care by selling e-waste.
