A leave-related dispute turned fatal inside a branch of Punjab and Sind Bank in Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon, when a security guard allegedly shot dead the bank manager after a heated argument, police said.
The victim, identified as Abhishek Sharma (34), a native of Bihar’s Patna district, had been posted as the branch manager and was living in Ghaziabad with his wife since August 2025.
According to police, the accused, Ravindra Hooda (45), a resident of Baghpat and a former Army personnel, had been at loggerheads with Sharma for several days over leave and salary-related issues.
The incident took place around 1:45 pm at the bank’s branch in the Balram Nagar area under Loni Border police station limits. Investigators said Hooda arrived at the bank on a motorcycle along with his associate, Sheeshpal. He asked his accomplice to wait outside before entering the branch.
Once inside, Hooda retrieved his licensed firearm, which had been deposited at the bank as per protocol. He then walked straight to the manager’s cabin, where a fresh argument broke out over the ongoing leave dispute. Within moments, Hooda allegedly fired at point-blank range, hitting Sharma in the chest.
The sudden firing triggered panic among staff and customers present inside the bank. Sharma collapsed on the floor, bleeding heavily, as colleagues rushed to his aid. There were five employees inside the branch at the time of the incident.
In the chaos that followed, the accused calmly walked out of the bank and fled the scene with his associate on the waiting motorcycle. CCTV footage from the bank’s entrance later showed Hooda leaving with another man, followed shortly by staff members carrying the injured manager out.
Bank employees immediately rushed Sharma on a motorcycle to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Police have since arrested both Hooda and his associate Sheeshpal. ACP Gyan Prakash Rai said preliminary investigation indicates that the accused had been frustrated over not being granted leave and was also dissatisfied with his salary. “The leave row had been going on for some time. The accused came with the intention to kill," he said.
Officials said tensions had escalated a day earlier when Sharma reportedly reprimanded Hooda over the phone for not reporting to duty. On Sunday, a bank holiday, the guard had informed the manager that he would not be able to come to work on Monday due to an emergency. However, when he remained absent, Sharma called him and asked him to report immediately, which is believed to have triggered the violent reaction.
Police further revealed that Hooda had joined the bank through a private agency only three months ago after retiring from the Army in 2018. He is married and has three children. Investigators also said he has a history of alcohol abuse and frequent altercations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural Zone) Surendra Nath Tiwari confirmed that the firearm used in the crime was kept within the bank premises. “The guard retrieved the weapon from the bank itself before committing the crime. There was a verbal altercation just before the shooting," he said.
An eyewitness, RN Pandey, said he heard a loud gunshot as he was about to enter the bank. “A man in a yellow T-shirt and half pants came out holding a gun. Another man wearing a turban was with him. They walked out calmly and fled on a motorcycle," he said.
Sharma’s wife, who was in Bihar at the time of the incident, has been informed, and the family is on its way to Ghaziabad.
