'Set Aside Ego, Don’t Spin Husband Around', Supreme Court Tells Wife In Marital Dispute

The Supreme Court, while hearing a marital dispute between two government employees, advised both husband and wife to set aside their egos and focus on the well-being of their children.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan observed that a wife should not “spin around" her husband, emphasising that both partners must act with maturity and sensitivity for the sake of their family. The court encouraged the couple to attempt mediation to resolve their differences rather than prolonging litigation.

In the case, the husband is working with the Railways in Delhi while the wife is employed with the Reserve Bank of India in Patna where she currently lives with her parents. The wife’s family has filed a case against the husband who said that he cannot live with his in-laws.

The couple, married in 2018, have a five-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. They have been living separately since 2023. The growing tension between them began to affect their children’s emotional well-being.

When the matter reached the Supreme Court, the wife filed a petition seeking to transfer the case. The bench urged the couple to consider the long-term welfare of their children and to approach the dispute with empathy and compromise.
