In a significant development for India’s anti-Maoist campaign, a large group of 50 CPI (Maoist) cadres, including two high-ranking Special Zonal Committee Members (SZCMs), surrendered before security forces on Wednesday at the BSF 40 Battalion camp in Kamtera, Koyalibeda, Kanker district of Chhattisgarh.
The surrendering group, which included 32 females and 18 males, was led by key Maoist figures Rajman Mandavi (SZCM) and Raju Salam (SZCM). The scale of the defection is underscored by the rank of the surrendering cadres, which includes:
- 2 DKSZC State Committee Members
- 5 Divisional Volunteer Company Member (DVCM) rank cadres, notably Prasad Tadami, Heeralal Komra, Jugnu Kowachi, Narsingh Netam, and Nande (wife of Rajman Mandavi)
- 21 Area Committee Member (ACM) level cadres
- 21 Party Members
Large Cache of Weapons Recovered
The cadres also laid down a substantial arsenal of 39 weapons, highlighting the military impact of the surrender. The recovered arms included:
- 7 AK-47 Rifles
- 2 SLRs (Self-Loading Rifles)
- 4 INSAS Rifles
- 1 INSAS LMG (Light Machine Gun)
- 1 Stun Gun
- 12 .303 Rifles
- 1 BGL (Barrel Grenade Launcher)
- 5 12-Bore Rifles
- 6 Single-Shot Rifles
A Wave of Defections from the Maad Region
This surrender, termed the “first tranche of report from north of Maad", signifies a major erosion of the CPI (Maoist)’s influence, particularly in the challenging and densely forested Abujhmad (Maad) area, historically considered a secure stronghold of the Naxals.
Authorities are anticipating an even larger follow-up, with the next tranche of approximately 120 cadres expected to surrender by Thursday morning in the south of Maad, specifically in the Bhairamgarh area of Bijapur district.
The mass surrender is a strong indicator of the success of intensified security operations and the appeal of the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policies, which offer a pathway for cadres to return to the mainstream.
