Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff and penalty on Indian imports, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor called it a “very serious matter" for India.
While speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Tharoor said the move could be a “bargaining tactic" amid ongoing negotiations, but cautioned that with the US being a major market for India—with exports estimated at $87–90 billion—New Delhi must remain firm. “If their demands are totally unreasonable, then our negotiators have the right to resist," he added.

His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on Indian imports starting August 1, along with an additional unspecified penalty.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump cited India’s high tariffs, stringent non-monetary trade barriers and continued military and energy ties with Russia as the basis for the move.
