'She Deserves The Best': Iga Swiatek And US Open Buzzing As Taylor Swift Gets Engaged

Iga Swiatek celebrated her U.S. Open win and Taylor Swift's engagement to Travis Kelce, sharing her excitement as a Swiftie during her press conference at Flushing Meadows.

Six-time major winner Iga Swiatek had more to celebrate after her U.S. Open first-round victory on Tuesday. As a self-proclaimed “Swiftie," she excitedly checked her phone to find that her pop idol, Taylor Swift, had news of her own.

The music superstar announced her engagement to NFL tight end Travis Kelce on Tuesday, following years of widely-publicised heartache that inspired many of her platinum records.

Swiatek, the Polish tennis player, said she saw the announcement as soon as Swift posted it and entered her press conference texting friends to share the news.

“She posted when I finished," said Swiatek. “Maybe that’s not a coincidence."

Swift and Kelce’s announcement, which garnered more than 18 million Instagram likes, was a highlight among the A-listers at last year’s men’s final. There, Jannik Sinner handed another Taylor – Fritz – a “cruel summer" with a three-set defeat.

Their ongoing popularity at Flushing Meadows was evident as broadcaster and retired player Mary Carillo interrupted her commentary on world number one Sinner’s first-round match to announce the news: “Taylor Swift is engaged!"

Her puzzled co-anchor, retired four-time major winner Jim Courier, responded dryly: “With, like, a new record?"

The news quickly circulated around the sunny plaza to the ESPN desk, where reporters asked Swiatek, the 2022 champion, for her reaction following her round-one win over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.

The second-ranked Swiatek then spent nearly half her post-match press conference addressing questions about the celebrity news.

“Well, I’m just happy for her, because she deserves the best," said Swiatek. “Obviously, she had a lot of boyfriends, so we know all about that. So hopefully this one will, you know, stick forever. Travis seems like a great guy."

When asked if she would answer a “non-Taylor question," Swiatek deadpanned: “No."
