Tension prevailed in Thalassery on Tuesday (December 23) following protests by traders and headload workers against the coastal highway survey, prompting the closure of shops in key commercial areas.
The situation escalated when traders and headload workers gathered in anticipation of the arrival of survey officials. A heavy police contingent was deployed amid apprehensions of a possible confrontation. Subsequently, traders held a meeting and decided to shut shops as a mark of protest.
Traders operating commercial establishments along the national highway stretch from Saidarpalli to the old bus stand traffic station expressed concern that the proposed coastal highway alignment would pass through the area. They fear that several shops, along with the livelihoods of their families and headload workers dependent on the area, would be severely affected.
Earlier, when officials attempted to proceed with survey-related activities, they were obstructed by traders, leading to a tense situation. Officials reportedly withdrew at the time without carrying out further procedures. Protesters are demanding either a realignment of the coastal highway or alternative rehabilitation arrangements for those likely to be displaced.
Despite the opposition, survey teams have begun marking land in certain stretches through which the coastal highway is proposed to pass. This triggered fresh protests, leading to shop closures.
A police team led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police camped at the site to maintain law and order. Traders who blocked the survey officials were arrested and removed by the police.
