While Delhi grapples with toxic air every winter, several cities in the country present a stark contrast

Shillong, Meghalaya: Known as the Scotland of the East, Shillong offers clean air and greenery.
Delhi woke up to a thick layer of smog once again on Thursday as the Air Quality Index (AQI) hovered between “very poor" and “severe" categories, triggering fresh health advisories and restrictions across the national capital. Visibility dropped in several areas, flights were delayed, and residents reported breathing discomfort, eye irritation, and persistent coughing.
According to air quality monitoring agencies, pollution levels in the Capital surge every year due to a combination of vehicular emissions, construction dust, stagnant winds, and seasonal factors. Hospitals across the city report a rise in patients with respiratory problems, particularly children and the elderly, during winter months. Schools too are forced to limit outdoor activities, while authorities urge residents to stay indoors and wear masks if stepping out.
Environmental experts warned that prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels can cause long-term damage to lungs and heart health. Despite emergency measures like traffic restrictions and the temporary shutdown of construction sites, Delhi continues to struggle with recurring air pollution every year.
While Delhi grapples with toxic air, several cities in the country present a stark contrast.
News18 takes a look at the top 10 places in India which have an AQI below 50 and enjoy clean air and clear, blue skies:
Munnar, Kerala (Real Time AQI 47): A beautiful hill station dotted with tea gardens and misty hills, Kerala’s Munnar has negligible industrial activity. This means the air is not polluted.
Coorg, Karnataka (Real Time AQI 49): Often called the “Coffee Capital of India", Coorg is defined by its fresh air, dense forests, and sprawling coffee estates. Together, these landscapes work like natural lungs, constantly renewing the oxygen in the atmosphere. With minimal traffic and almost no heavy industries, the region maintains remarkably low levels of air pollution.
Aizawl, Mizoram (Real Time AQI 48): Aizawl, the scenic capital of Mizoram, sits gracefully among rolling hills lined with pine trees. With limited traffic and extensive forested areas, the city benefits from a steady circulation of clean, fresh air year-round. These natural conditions help Aizawl maintain consistently healthy air quality levels.
Coonoor, Tamil Nadu (Real Time AQI 48): Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, Coonoor is a calm and picturesque hill town known for its lush greenery and tranquil surroundings. Quieter and far greener than many nearby areas, it benefits from expansive tea gardens, a cool climate, and high altitude—factors that help keep its air quality exceptionally clean, often recording AQI levels below 50.
Shillong, Meghalaya (Real Time AQI 47): Often referred to as the “Scotland of the East," Shillong is blessed with rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, and a refreshing natural charm. Regular rainfall and favourable climatic conditions help keep the air clean and largely free from pollution. With its pristine environment, Shillong continues to be a favourite destination for those who love nature.
Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh (Real Time AQI 49): Kinnaur, a remote district in Himachal Pradesh, is defined by its snow-clad peaks, sprawling apple orchards, and low population density. Together, these features contribute to making it one of the cleanest and least polluted regions in India.
Gokarna, Karnataka (Real Time AQI 49): Gokarna, a charming coastal town, consistently enjoys an AQI below 50. Gentle sea breezes help keep the air fresh, while minimal traffic and the constant flow of clean ocean air inland contribute to its excellent air quality.
