Six cousin sisters drowned in the Yamuna river in Agra on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) afternoon. The girls were taking a dip in the river and were swept away after one of them got her foot stuck in the sludge.

Vinayak Bhosle, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said the girls hailed from Sikandara area. The eldest was Muskan (18), who, along with her sisters Divya (13), Sandhya (12), and Naina (14), had gone to the Yamuna. They were also accompanied by Sonam (12), and Shivani (17), their cousins.

Eye witnesses informed the police that the girls were making videos in the river and enjoying their time together. The accident happened when one of the girls slipped. As they were holding each other’s hands, all of them drowned, police said.

The family said that they allowed the girls to bathe in the river considering the fact that the river dries up in the summers, but the water had increased suddenly.

Four girls were swept away by the current, two were saved by their brothers, but they too were declared dead in the hospital.

Police found the bodies hours later.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the deaths. He also instructed the district administration to provide immediate and proper medical assistance to the injured. “The loss of life due to drowning in the river in Agra district is extremely heartbreaking and painful. My condolences are with the bereaved families,” he said.

A compensation of ₹4 lakh from the chief minister’s disaster relief fund has been announced for each of the deceased.
