The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was unable to issue a joint statement on Thursday after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh refused to sign it.
Rajnath Singh earlier did not sign the communique due to the omission of the Pahalgam terror attack and not having India’s concerns over Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism explicitly addressed.
The ministry of external affairs (MEA) said the disagreement stemmed from one country’s objection to India’s concerns on cross-border terrorism. Consequently, the SCO failed to reach a consensus on certain issues, it said.
“Our stance on terrorism remains firm: it is a global threat that requires a united fight," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during the weekly media briefing.
