In Madurai, a stray dog attacked an 8-year-old boy and his father. The boy was bitten on his arms, legs, and thighs. Both were hospitalized and given anti-rabies shots.

In yet another disturbing stray dog attack, a boy and his father were attacked in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai. As per the CCTV footage, a stray dog barged into their house and bit an 8-year-old boy; when his father intervened, the dog also attacked him.

As per a report by NDTV, the boy, a class 3 student, went to the bathroom before going to school, when he was attacked by the stray dog. The dog bit his arms, legs and thighs; upon hearing him screaming, other family members ran towards him.

The CCTV footage shows the dog running erratically in the house and was chasing people in aggression.

Both father and son were admitted to the hospital after the incident. The boy received stitches in three places along with anti-rabies treatment.

Considering the increased stray dog attacks, the Supreme Court in July took suo motu cognisance of a media report that mentioned incidents of dog bites leading to rabies. The top court called it “very disturbing and alarming".

“The news item contains some alarming and disturbing figures and facts," a bench of Justices J. B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan said.

The report stated that hundreds of dog bites were being reported in Delhi and on its outskirts, leading to rabies. Both adults and children were “falling prey to the dreadful disease".

“Let this order be placed along with the news report before the Chief Justice of India for appropriate orders," the bench added.

As per the government data, India reported over 37 lakh dog bite cases and 54 suspected human rabies deaths in 2024.

According to data shared by Union Minister S. P. Singh Baghel in the Parliament on July 22, the total number of dog bite cases stood at 37,17,336, while the total ‘suspected human rabies deaths’ were 54 last year.
