As a powerful storm swept across southern Brazil on Monday, December 15, a replica of the Statue of Liberty collapsed in a parking lot. The incident was captured on camera and was later shared on social media. In the clip, the 24-metre-tall replica outside a Havan megastore in Guaiba, Rio Grande do Sul, was seen first tilting slowly due to strong winds, then collapsing to the ground.
Cars were seen fleeing the spot just seconds before the entire statue came down. The replica, installed in 2020, toppled forward while its 11-metre base remained intact. Thanks to the quick response of nearby bystanders who moved nearby vehicles, no injuries or property damage were reported. Guaiba’s mayor, Marcelo Maranata, confirmed the incident on social media, stating that the wind speeds at the time of the collapse were around 80 km/h.
Guaiba Mayor Confirms That Situation Was Under Control
He said, “On Monday afternoon (15th), our city was hit by strong wind gusts that reached 80 mph. Since the first moment, we have been on the streets following the situation closely. The Civil Defense and the Secretary of Infrastructure are fully mobilised, attending events and ensuring the safety of the population." He informed the citizens that while other buildings suffered minor damage, everything was under control.
Internet Calls The Incident “Ominous"
Once the clip surfaced, people began reacting to the incident, with one user saying, “Not to be that person, but this kinda feels like an ominous sign. Idk, so glad everyone is safe!!!"
Another added, “Well, that’s certainly not a good sign… but why does it look like it’s made of rubber when it hits the ground? And how did high winds blow over something that big? Strange in many ways."
“This has to be the most American location in Brazil," someone else pointed out.
A different person asked, “Omg, is the one in New York ok? They might be mentally connected."
Havan Released A Statement Following The Collapse
Following the incident, Havan, who had installed the replica, issued a statement: “The area was immediately isolated by the company, following all safety protocols." They also mentioned that debris removal began within hours and that store operations continued without interruption. Havan emphasised that all its Statue of Liberty replicas across Brazil comply with technical and safety standards, including mandatory engineering approvals. An internal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
In 2021, a similar incident happened in Capao da Canoa. During a cyclone, a replica collapsed due to strong winds up to 80 km/hr.
