Luis Suarez uses his mouth in ways least imagined on a football field. He has bit players in the past and now the 38-year old Inter Miami forward appeared to spit at a member of the Seattle Sounders’ coaching staff after his team lost 0-3 in the Leagues Cup final.

The episode came at the end of the game, after a fracas involving both set of players seemingly sparked by Suarez’s act. He first grabbed the Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas around the neck, before he found some violent help from his teammate Sergio Busquets who landed a blow on the chin of Vargas.

Suarez turned his attention to a Sounders staff member and just as he was held back by teammate Oscar Ustari, Suarez seemed to have spit in the coach’s direction.

Seattle boss Brian Schmetzer said: “Unfortunately, that is going to take some of the attention away from a great performance by the Seattle Sounders. Their players were frustrated and that led to some things happening on the field that shouldn’t happen on the field. I’m going to shut that down, because that shouldn’t be the story. The story of the game is not what happened after the game.”

Suarez’s coach Javier Mascherano said: “I have nothing to say because I was far away and didn’t see what happened. Nobody likes for there to be these types of actions. Maybe there was provocation, but I don’t know what happened.”

Suarez has been involved in several controversial incidents during his career. In 2011, Suarez had racially abused Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in a match between the two sides in October. Suarez categorically denied the claims but according to a FA report published in 2012, Suarez told Evra, “Porque tu eres negro”. “Mr Evra said that at the time Mr Suarez made that comment, he (Mr Evra) understood it to mean ‘Because you are a n***’,” the report added. “He now says that he believes the words used by Mr Suarez mean ‘Because you are black,’” the report continued. As a result, Suarez was banned for eight matches and given a £40,000 fine. That would not be the end of the matter, however. In February, when the two teams met for the return fixture, Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand before the match. He, however, apologised for that.

He also served bans for three separate biting incidents when playing for Ajax, Liverpool and Uruguay.
