James Holder, co-founder of British fashion brand Superdry, has been convicted by a UK court for raping a woman at his London home in 2022.

According to reports, the incident took place after Holder and the woman met during a night out before going back to his residence. Prosecutors told the court that the woman repeatedly said “no" and asked him to stop, but Holder ignored her objections.

During the trial, Holder claimed the encounter was consensual. However, the jury rejected his defence and found him guilty of rape following deliberations at the court.

The conviction marks a major development involving one of Britain’s best-known fashion entrepreneurs. Holder co-founded Superdry in 2003 along with businessman Julian Dunkerton, helping build the brand into an internationally recognised clothing company known for its Japanese-inspired designs.

The court heard testimony from the complainant detailing the events of the night, while prosecutors argued that evidence presented during the trial supported her account of non-consensual sex.

Holder is expected to be sentenced at a later date. Under UK law, rape convictions can carry lengthy prison terms depending on the severity of the offence and circumstances of the case.

The case has attracted widespread attention in the UK because of Holder’s high-profile status in the fashion industry and Superdry’s global presence.
