Supreme Court hearing on Presidential Reference LIVE: Bench lead by CJI Gavai to start from today

A Constitution Bench headed by CJI B.R. Gavai is scheduled to hear the Presidential Reference from August 19, 2025. The hearing will open with Kerala and Tamil Nadu raising preliminary objections to its maintainability, arguing that the questions referred by the President are no longer res integra or unsettled questions of law.

In a brief hearing on July 29, 2025, a five-Judge Bench headed by CJI Gavai asked the Centre and States to file their written submissions by August 12. 

The Supreme Court said the Centre and the States supporting the Presidential Reference will be heard on August 19, August 20, August 21 and August 26, while those opposing it will be heard on August 28 and September 2, September 3 and September 9.
