The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL challenging the Union Government’s Ethanol Blending Programme, which mandates the sale of petrol blended with 20% ethanol (E20).
A bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran heard the matter and refused to interfere with the rollout. During the proceedings, Attorney General raised concerns over the intent behind the litigation, remarking that “a huge lobby" was backing the petitioners.
The Centre, too, came out strongly in defence of the policy, questioning whether “someone from outside the country" should dictate what type of petrol India must use. Officials argued that the ethanol programme supports sugarcane farmers, cuts crude oil imports, and strengthens energy.
