Politics took a backseat on Tuesday evening when Samajwadi Party MPs set aside discussions and broke into a birthday chorus for Iqra Hassan, surprising the 28-year-old with cake, laughter, and even a cheeky Rs 100 note from party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The occasion was the visit of INDIA bloc’s vice-presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy, where several SP MPs had gathered for an interaction at Lucknow’s Taj Hotel.

Jaya Bachchan, Priya Saroj, Ziaur Rahman Barq and others were in attendance when, suddenly, a waiter appeared carrying a cake. As it was placed on the table, MPs in unison wished Hassan a happy birthday, leaving her visibly stunned.

The warmest gesture came from Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav, who stepped forward to cut the cake alongside Hassan, as others clapped and cheered. Amid the cheerful mood, Akhilesh Yadav lightened the atmosphere further by presenting a crisp Rs 100 note to the young MP as a birthday gift. The hall erupted in laughter, with Hassan blushing as she accepted the note.

Later, in a heartfelt post on Facebook, Hassan wrote: “On my birthday, I received blessings and love from Akhilesh ji and all my colleagues in Lucknow. This trust is my greatest wealth, which inspires me to remain dedicated to serving society and the people."

The Rise of Iqra Hassan

Born into a politically influential family of Kairana in Shamli district, Hassan’s journey has been shaped by both privilege and struggle. Her early education was in Kairana, before moving to Delhi’s Queen Mary’s School for her higher secondary studies. She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College and pursued law at Delhi University.

In 2016, she made her first political attempt by contesting the district panchayat elections but lost narrowly by 5,000 votes. Determined to expand her horizons, she pursued higher studies in the UK, completing her LLM in International Law and Politics at the University of London.

During her time abroad, Hassan made headlines for her vocal opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), emerging as a young face of dissent.

Her true political test came in 2022. Just before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, her elder brother, SP MLA Nahid Hassan, was jailed in multiple cases. With the family stronghold of Kairana under threat, she took charge of the campaign.

Pitted against BJP’s Mriganka Singh, daughter of late MP Hukum Singh, Hassan spearheaded the grassroots effort with rallies, public meetings, and door-to-door outreach. The gamble paid off — Nahid Hassan won the seat from behind bars, a victory widely credited to his sister’s leadership.

As Lok Sabha MP from Kairana, Hassan represents the youngest generation of SP leaders who combine global education with local roots. At 28, she embodies a mix of cosmopolitan exposure and grassroots connect, making her a unique presence in the party’s parliamentary wing.
