Parallels are being drawn to YS Sharmila, who launched her own party in Andhra, but failed to make a mark before joining Congress as state PCC chief. Will Kavitha repeat the story?

Sources say Kavitha might consider forming her own political outfit. She already heads Telangana Jagruti, but suspension from BRS has effectively cut off that platform. (PTI Photo)

Telangana politics witnessed high drama as BRS leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha was suspended from the party following her fiery press conference targeting top leaders, including Harish Rao, Santosh Rao, and Mega Krishna Reddy. On Wednesday, she announced her resignation from the post of MLC and the party’s primary membership.

BRS high command’s decision to suspend Kavitha over her alleged party activities comes amid speculation over her political future.

With doors now shut in the BRS, political circles are abuzz: Will Kavitha join Congress, move to the BJP, or float her own party? Here’s a closer look at the possibilities.

Why Kavitha Was Suspended

On her return from the US, Kavitha launched a blistering attack on senior BRS leaders, accusing them of damaging the party’s reputation. Within 24 hours, the party leadership cracked the whip, citing “behaviour causing damage to the party" as the reason for her suspension.

Kavitha’s father and BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao suspended her with immediate effect, party General Secretary T Ravinder Rao and another General Secretary (in charge of disciplinary affairs) Soma Bharat Kumar said in a communication to the media.

The move marks a turning point for the MLC, who now faces a political crossroads with several options on the table.

Option 1: Joining Congress

Political analysts believe Congress could be her natural choice. The reason? Kavitha spent time in jail over the alleged liquor scam, and the perception remains that the BJP played a role in the case.

However, Congress leaders have sent mixed signals. While PCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud hinted there was “no problem" in welcoming her, others in the party remain cautious.

Option 2: Joining the BJP

The BJP is eager to expand its base in Telangana, but Kavitha’s entry remains uncertain. Her secular image, the perception of the BJP’s role in her legal troubles, and the presence of her political rival, MP Arvind, as a key BJP leader, complicate matters.

Would the BJP risk internal friction to induct her? And would Kavitha align with a party often seen as her adversary?

Option 3: Floating Her Own Party

Sources say Kavitha might consider forming her own political outfit. She already heads Telangana Jagruti, but suspension from BRS has effectively cut off that platform. If she launches a new party, it could carry the Jagruti legacy forward under a fresh banner.

With the Jubilee Hills by-election coming up, she could contest as an independent or under her new party’s banner, aiming to re-enter the assembly as an MLA.

The Sharmila Parallel

Many are drawing comparisons to YS Sharmila, who launched her own party in Andhra Pradesh but failed to make a mark before joining Congress as the state PCC chief. Will Kavitha repeat that story or chart a different path?

Her next move will determine whether she fades into political obscurity or emerges as a formidable player in Telangana politics.

What Lies Ahead

Kavitha’s suspension sets the stage for a political realignment in Telangana. Whether she opts for Congress, the BJP, or her own party, one thing is clear: her choices will reshape not just her career but could also influence the state’s political landscape in the run-up to future elections.
