The Tamil Nadu government has issued orders for enhancing the education advance extended for children of government employees, from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh for professional programmes. For arts and science programmes and polytechnic, it has been increased from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000.
The enhancement would take effect from the 2025-26 academic year. All categories of the government employees (Group A, B, C and D) could avail the education advance subject to the actual amount (which includes all the fees and other expenses) already paid/to be paid for the academic year.
The Finance Department’s order was issued in line with the announcement made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on the floor of the Assembly earlier this year. There would be no change in the existing rules for the grant of education advance to government servants.
As per the existing rules, if the government servant’s spouse was also a government servant, only one of them would be entitled to the advance. The concession of the advance is available for every academic year. If the previous advance was outstanding, the second advance would not be sanctioned.
The advance would be interest free and would be recovered in 10 monthly instalments commencing from the salary of the month succeeding the drawl of advance.
