A viral Salem ‘robbery’ video turned out to be a revenge act.
A viral video showing a man being robbed on a bridge in Salem has taken a shocking twist. Police say it was not a robbery at all, but an act of revenge.
On Saturday, a video went viral showing three drunk men stopping a man on a bridge and taking his phone. People online claimed that an innocent man had been robbed in broad daylight.
But after an inquiry, Salem District SP Anil Kumar Giri said it was not a case of robbery. “This is not a professional crime. It was done with a motive,” he said.
Police found that the man in the video, who called himself Suresh, had lied about his identity. His real name is Brahmanayagam from Chennai.
He had created a fake Instagram account and befriended a minor girl. Later, he allegedly harassed her online. The girl complained to a man named Ramakrishnan, who was her friend and also knew Brahmanayagam through an online gaming app.
Ramakrishnan warned Brahmanayagam several times to stop harassing the girl, but he did not listen. So, Ramakrishnan and his friends made a plan.
They created a fake social media ID and tricked Brahmanayagam into coming to Chennai. When he came, they took his mobile phone and destroyed it. Then they let him go.
“Their goal was to destroy the obscene photos and chats with the minor girl,” SP Giri said. “We have seen some screenshots but cannot share them now. The investigation is still on.”
Police have arrested three men and are continuing their probe.
