Liverpool star player Mohamed Salah criticised UEFA for posting a tribute to ‘Palestinian Pele’ Suleiman al-Obeid, following the tragic demise of the 41-year-old former player, as the update did not mention that Obeid died after being struck by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip.

UEFA shared a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that read, “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pele’. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times."

Egyptian superstar Salah responded by posting, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?"

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said in a statement that Obeid was killed on Wednesday when Israeli forces targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip.

Obeid, who was born in Gaza City and played 24 international matches for the Palestine team, was married and had five children.

In October 2023, Salah urged world leaders to unite and permit humanitarian aid into Gaza to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war, initiated by the Palestinian militant group Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, 662 individuals from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 from the football community, as reported by the PFA.
