Terence Crawford delivered a career-defining performance on Saturday night, shocking Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo" Alvarez to claim the undisputed super middleweight crown and etch his name into boxing history as the first fighter to become undisputed champion in three weight classes.
Crawford, 37, moved up two divisions to challenge Alvarez at 168 pounds and emerged victorious by unanimous decision in a fight that lived up to its billing.
Judges Steve Weisfeld (116-112), Tim Cheatham (115-113), and Max DeLuca (115-113) all handed the American the win, pushing his perfect record to 42-0 with 31 knockouts.
The triumph adds to Crawford’s already glittering résumé, which includes undisputed reigns at super lightweight (140 lbs) and welterweight (147 lbs).
With Saturday’s win, the Omaha native became a four-division world champion and silenced doubters who had long claimed his dominance came against weaker opposition.
A Tactical Masterclass
In front of a partisan crowd of 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home of the NFL’s Raiders, Crawford used his superior speed and agility to frustrate Alvarez. Despite stepping into uncharted territory at 167.5 pounds — a career high for him — Crawford showed no signs of diminished quickness.
After a cautious opening, the American gradually wore Alvarez down, using his jab to control distance and unleashing sharp combinations in the later rounds. By the championship rounds, it was clear who had more in the tank.
Alvarez, 35, struggled to pin Crawford down despite his pedigree as a four-division world champion and the face of boxing for over a decade. The Mexican superstar slipped to 63-3-2, with the loss raising questions about how much longer he can remain dominant at the elite level.
Following the bout, Crawford was gracious in victory, reserving high praise for his legendary opponent.
“Canelo is a great champion. I’ve got nothing but respect for Canelo," Crawford said in the ring. “I’m a big fan of Canelo, and he fought like a champion today."
