A commute aboard Telangana State Road Transport Corporation buses will become more expensive from October 6, following Saturday’s announcement of a revision in city bus fares.

Under the new fare structure, termed an infrastructure fare, which is pegged to a need for developing infrastructure for an all-electric fleet within the city limits, the revision will see a hike of ₹5 for the first three stages. From the fourth stage onwards, fares will rise by ₹10. For Metro Deluxe and e-Metro AC bus services, the increase will be ₹5 for the first stage and ₹10 thereafter.

According to the Telangana government, the revenue derived from this will be used to fund replacing all diesel buses operating within the Outer Ring Road with 2,800 electric buses by 2027, and developing allied infrastructure. The transition is part of the State’s broader plan to promote clean energy and reduce air pollution.

The move will include building of 10 new bus depots, and upgrading the 19 existing depots with high-tension charging connections. In addition, 10 intermediate charging stations across the city will also be developed. According to the Telangana government, the move will cost an estimated ₹392 crore.
