The Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project is advancing swiftly and is poised to transform daily travel for lakhs of Mumbaikars.

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), excavation at the Thane-side TBM launching shaft, which began in October 2024, is nearing completion.

The Thane casting yard is already fully functional, while groundwork at the Borivali yard is in progress. Land acquisition on the Thane side has been mostly completed, and rehabilitation of Project-Affected Persons (PAP) in Borivali is currently underway, an official update posted on X on November 2 stated.

According to the MMRDA, the 11.8-kilometre underground tunnel, will connect Thane Ghodbunder Road directly to the Western Express Highway.

Upon completion, the project is expected to slash travel time from the existing 60–90 minutes to around 15 minutes, offering major relief from citywide traffic congestion. The twin tunnels will run beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, leveraging advanced engineering while ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Each tunnel will have three lanes, including an emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The design prioritises safety, incorporating advanced systems such as ventilation units, firefighting installations, smoke detectors, and illuminated LED signboards.

“Once operational, the tunnel is expected not only to reduce travel times dramatically but also to alleviate vehicular congestion, cut emissions, and provide Mumbai with a faster, cleaner, and smarter commuting alternative—a vital infrastructure milestone for the city’s growing urban population," Free Press Journal quoted an official as saying.
