Heat, sunlight and weather cause the structure to shift slightly, even though it looks completely still.

The Eiffel Tower Actually Moves Every Day And Tilts Away From The Sun
The Eiffel Tower seems rock solid, but it’s not as still as you might think. Every day, the weather and sunlight make the metal swell and contract a bit. When the sun hits one side, that part heats up and stretches out, while the other side — the one in the shade — stays cooler and doesn’t move as much. All this makes the tower lean just a little, shifting away from the sun.
This isn’t random movement. It follows a pattern.
As the sun moves across the sky during the day, the direction of the tilt changes with it. At its peak, the top of the tower can shift by around 10 to 15 centimetres. Over the course of a day, that movement traces a small circular path rather than just a single tilt.
The reason this happens comes down to the material.
The Eiffel Tower is made of wrought iron, which reacts to temperature changes. When it gets hot, the metal expands. When it cools down, it contracts again. This is known as thermal expansion, and it’s something engineers factor into large metal structures.
The tower doesn’t just tilt. It also changes size slightly.
In warmer conditions, it can grow by a few millimetres in height. In colder weather, especially during winter, it contracts and becomes slightly shorter again.
Over time, the tower has also become taller for another reason.
When it first opened in 1889, it stood at about 312 metres. Today, with antennas added over the years, it reaches around 330 metres in height.
None of these changes affect its stability.
The tower was designed to handle movement from both temperature and wind. Its curved shape helps reduce wind resistance, and the structure is flexible enough to adjust without damage.
In fact, most of this movement is impossible to notice from the ground.
To visitors, it looks completely still.
But in reality, the Eiffel Tower is constantly adjusting to the sun, the temperature and the weather around it, shifting slightly throughout the day in ways you’d never expect from something that size.
