RVD stands by Matt Riddle despite inappropriate comments about AJ Lee

AJ Lee returned to the WWE at the end of SmackDown last week in Chicago. Even though the comeback was anticipated for a while, it still took the world of wrestling by storm when Lee skipped her way into the ring.

But not everyone had praise for the Diva, who had left the ring 10 years ago. Some, like former MMA and wrestling star Matt Riddle, said some pretty inappropriate things, which obviously made fans mad. But amid all the chaos, an unexpected ally has held his hand out in support of Riddle, and fans are completely bewildered at the notion.

RVD says he has Matt Riddle's back for now

RVD is doing what RVD does - stir things up! And fans are not taking it well that their favorite wrestler is backing up someone like Matt Riddle, who recently said AJ Lee was not to "get around" back in the day.

He also made some comments about her husband, CM Punk, and fans are basically out for blood. “I mean, to be fair—and I’m not one to talk, I’m a little f**ed up myself—but she did go get around from what I heard. But no disrespect to that. Hey, it’s whatever. People like to hook up. And if that’s the worst thing he did, whatever, dude. I’ve done it too.”

RVD, though, after the mess happened, took an unexpected stand - saying he had Riddle's back, even after those inappropriate comments by him.

But that comment was made for a reason, and RVD has disclosed the same in a recent chat.

RVD wanted to ruffle some features with his comments

RVD was on the Inside the Ring podcast recently, where he was asked why he would back Matt Riddle, who is getting a lot of hate for his inappropriate comments about AJ Lee and CM Punk. He knew his comments would annoy a certain section of people, and that was his main goal - to ruffle some feathers.“So far, so far I have Matt Riddle’s back. That was a complete shot at the oversensitive IWC, because they can’t handle it when someone has a different opinion than them.

Just knowing how much heat Matt got—and tends to get on his own—he doesn’t need RVD to have his back. He’s fine. But I knew that would ruffle feathers, clutch some pearls."

He further said that the biggest reason for him saying he had Riddle's back was because people were already against Riddle and it wouldn't make much of a difference if he was with them. He doesn't want to follow the status quo, doing what everyone else does, without using his brain, and that is the biggest reason for him going against the norm and backing Riddle.“As far as why Matt got attacked, it’s just him being himself. He’s always been confrontational like that. I’m not saying I agree with what he said about AJ Lee and CM Punk. I have no reason to believe it’s true or not. I don’t even care about that. For me, it’s more about the fact that society says, ‘No, you’re wrong for disagreeing with us.’ That’s when it becomes, f*** that. Opinions aren’t right or wrong—they’re subjective.

RVD said Riddle was just being himself - confrontational, and not afraid to say something. Which is why he has his back for now. Although how long that continues, everyone will wait to see it.Also Read: WWE Raw results and highlights (09-08-2025): AJ Styles wins, AJ Lee returns to RAW, Bronson Reed beats LA Knight, and more
