Teenage sensation Max Dowman made history as the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
It’s a unique thing to write, but the 16-year-old provided the Gunners the creative spark they needed after pushing and failing to score at home against Everton’s rugged defense for 88 minutes.
The breakthrough came when Dowman delivered a cross that allowed fellow second-half substitute Viktor Gyokeres to open the scoring in the 89th minute. Moments later, Dowman capped a memorable evening by sprinting from inside his own half and finishing into an empty net after Jordan Pickford had gone forward for a last-ditch corner.
At just 16 years and 73 days old, Dowman broke the record of 16 years, 270 days held by James Vaughan that had stood since 2005.
It was a moment months into making. He had already enjoyed a record-breaking season, earlier becoming Arsenal’s youngest starter and the youngest player to feature in the UEFA Champions League. After suffering an injury — from a bad tackle by an opposition player in an age-group game — Dowman was pushing manager Mikel Arteta with his flair in league cup matches and small cameos.
For the Emirates Stadium crowd, it came as a moment of unbridled joy to see a Hale End youngster become a cult hero. Many labeled it among the best moments for the stadium, at par with club legend Thierry Henry’s winner against Leeds during his short comeback loan stint at the club in 2009.
Henry was one of the last to react to Dowman’s moment, but his two-word statement was as good as it gets. Taking to Instagram, he shared a clip of the goal with the caption ‘Pure Joy’.
Arteta described the moment as special, saying the bench and supporters had time to savour the build-up before the goal, creating a magical atmosphere at the final whistle. He also credited Dowman’s impact after coming on with 16 minutes remaining, saying the teenager instantly lifted Arsenal’s attack and repeatedly made things happen with the ball.
The win strengthened Arsenal’s grip at the top of the table, moving them 10 points clear of Manchester City, before the Citizens drew at West Ham to cut it down to nine, with a game in hand.
