Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh on Friday (October 31, 2025) handed over the keys to the house constructed by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for Melhi, mother of sanitation workers N. Joy, who was killed while cleaning the Amayizhanjan Canal in the capital in July last year. Mayor Arya Rajendran presided over the function.

Joy, 42, was put on the job by a private agency which was contracted by Railways to clean a section of the Amayizhanjan Canal which passes through the railway property under the rails near the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. As the rain intensified, the flow inside the canal increased, and Joy was unable to get out on time.

Though fellow workers attempted to rescue him initially with ropes, the efforts were not successful. His body was recovered after a major search operation which went on for forty-six hours.
