It lasted just 38 minutes, but it was still a full-scale war. The Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896 was not a random clash. It came out of a power struggle over who would control Zanzibar, a small but strategically important island on the East African coast that sat at the centre of trade routes in the Indian Ocean.

Back then, Zanzibar had a sultan in charge, at least on paper. In truth, though, Britain pulled the strings. So, anyone wanting the throne basically needed Britain to sign off on it.

Things really started to unravel when Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini died all of a sudden in August 1896. That’s when everyone saw just how shaky the setup really was. His cousin, Khalid bin Barghash, moved quickly and took control of the palace before the British could respond. He declared himself sultan without waiting for their consent.

The British refused to accept it. They backed another candidate, Hamud bin Mohammed, and sent a clear ultimatum. Khalid had to step down, leave the palace and surrender his claim to the throne. He didn’t.

Instead, Khalid fortified the palace, gathered around 2,000 supporters, and prepared for resistance. His forces included palace guards, armed civilians and even a royal yacht stationed in the harbour.

Facing him was a far more organised force. The British had warships positioned offshore, along with trained naval crews and artillery aimed directly at the palace complex.

When the deadline passed, the standoff ended immediately.

British ships opened fire, targeting the wooden palace and surrounding structures. The bombardment was intense and highly one-sided. Within minutes, large parts of the palace caught fire and began collapsing.

Khalid’s forces tried to respond, but they were outmatched. The royal yacht was sunk early in the attack, and return fire had little impact against the British ships.

The entire resistance began to fall apart almost as soon as it started.

Within 38 minutes, the fighting was over. Khalid fled the palace and escaped to the German consulate, effectively ending his claim. British-backed forces moved in, and Hamud bin Mohammed was installed as the new sultan.

The scale of the damage was heavily uneven. Around 500 people on the Zanzibari side were reported killed or injured, while the British recorded only one minor injury.

The war remains the shortest ever recorded, but it was also a clear display of how colonial power worked at the time.
