The Thrissur Corporation has initiated action to cull violent wild boars that have been posing a serious threat to residents in several city divisions. The decision was made following a formal complaint submitted by Opposition Leader Rajan J. Pallan, prompting Mayor M.K. Varghese to issue a special directive authorising the killing of dangerous wild boars under legal provisions.

Numerous residential associations, including Kairali Nagar Residents Association, Kera Residents Association, Gandhinagar Residents Association, and MG Nagar Association in the Gandhinagar Division, have been persistently reporting the growing menace of wild boars entering residential areas and causing destruction.

“Several residents personally approached me to express their fears and concerns over increasing wild boar attacks,” said Mr. Rajan J. Pallan. “As Opposition Leader, I submitted a formal request to the Mayor, urging immediate action to protect public safety. The Mayor responded with urgency and issued a directive to eliminate the threat in a lawful manner,”he said.

As part of the operation, a wild boar weighing approximately 100 kg was shot and killed on Wednesday night in the Kairali Nagar area of the 11th division, under the supervision of Corporation officials.

The carcass was brought to the Thrissur Corporation main office, where it was secured overnight by Health Department officials. On Thursday morning, a veterinary surgeon examined the body and certified the kill. In accordance with health protocols, the meat was rendered unusable by pouring kerosene over it and was subsequently safely buried under the supervision of the Corporation’s Health Department, Veterinary Surgeon, and District Forest Officer.

The culling follows a recent government order allowing local authorities to take legal measures against violent wild boars, whose increasing presence in urban areas has sparked fear and property damage.
