Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated film 'Thug Life', directed by Mani Ratnam was released yesterday on June 5 amid considerable buzz and some controversies. Despite the anticipation of the reunion of the legendary actor-director duo, the film opened to mixed reviews and a moderate box office response.As per Sacnilk, early estimates suggest that 'Thug Life' earned around Rs 17 crore net across India on its first day, which is notably lower than Kamal Haasan's previous release 'Indian 2', which had collected Rs 25.6 crore on its opening day.Thug Life Movie Review

Theatre occupancy

The film saw varied occupancy rates across different languages and regions. In Tamil Nadu, 'Thug Life registered' a strong overall occupancy of 52.06% on its first day. Morning and afternoon shows maintained steady attendance at around 50.66% and 50.35% respectively, while evening shows dipped slightly to 45.15%.

Night shows saw a significant rise in occupancy, reaching 62.07%, indicating a better turnout during late hours.In contrast, the Hindi version of the film struggled to attract audiences, with an overall occupancy of just 5.79%. Morning shows had a low turnout of 4.79%, which slightly improved to 6.61% in the afternoon, while evening and night shows hovered around 5.80% and 5.97% respectively.In the Telugu-speaking regions, Thug Life managed an overall occupancy of 21.36%.

Morning and afternoon shows performed similarly with 22.43% and 23.61% occupancy, while evening and night shows saw a slight dip, with attendance figures of 19.71% and 19.69%.

About the film

Directed by Mani Ratnam is a gritty gangster action drama set against a backdrop of crime, betrayal, and power struggles. The story begins in 1994 with a violent shootout orchestrated by Sadanand, a rival gang leader of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker played by Kamal Haasan. During this chaos, a young boy named Amaran loses his family and is rescued by Sakthivel and his elder brother Manickam. They raise Amaran as their own, grooming him to take part in their criminal empire.The film features an ensemble cast including Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, T.R. Silambarasan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar.
